Should You Utilize A Countertop Water Filter?

By Roxy Albright

A countertop water filter may be a purchase you are contemplating to keep yourself and loved ones protected from contaminated water. But what can water filters actually do? The answer really depends on what type of filter we're talking about, and from which particulates you want to be protected. Using products like Pristine water purification could yield quite different results than a countertop water filter system. Various filtration products remove various kinds and amounts of particulates in water.

We will discuss a bit more about what a countertop water filter could remove, and why it may be a good idea. We will also look into some other types of water purification and determine what benefits they may offer. Finally, we'll discuss the basic benefits of adding any water filtration system versus skipping them all.

A countertop water filter such as an Aquasana AQ-4000 might start out somewhat costly. You have to dish out around $100 initially, and then around $48 dollars to replace used filters. However, each filter may cover you for 500 gallons of water filtration. This filter system would come certified to reduce lead, chloramines, cysts, unpleasant tastes or odors, and volatile organic compounds or VOCs. That is just one type of a countertop filter and what it could protect you from within your water. For the basic goals of protecting your drinking water or to make it taste and smell better, you would likely do just fine with such a countertop water filtration unit. While it may occupy some counter space that other units would leave available, it is convenient in that filters are not used up quite as quickly as some units that may seem more inexpensive at the outset due to initial purchase costs.

Products such as Pristine water purification tablets can also be effective, but in a very different setting. Silver ion or chlorine dioxide based tablets are an excellent portable tool for when you are away from home and may need to sure up your water from not-so-trustworthy sources as your home faucet may be. These products can kill Cryptosporidium and Giardia to protect you from such waterborne illnesses in your drinking water. However, they are somewhat of a disadvantage because they can take a very long time (30 minutes up to even 4 hours) to work effectively. They are nicer than some other purification forms in that they do not typically negatively effect the taste of your water. These and other products may be enough for you if you trust the water straight from the tap in your household, but not from various other locations.

Water quality in the United States is quite reliable, however, even in the past few decades some major metropolitan areas such as New York, Milwaukee, and Las Vegas have seen problems with waterborne illness. People who often go out into the wilderness may know that water isn't naturally safe. Using portable filtration systems may remedy bad water situations, and countertop units might consistently protect your home. Even in areas with reliable water, natural disasters can change that.

Whether you utilize a countertop water filter system or portable tablets such as those made by Pristine water filtration you could remove various dangers from water, but you should consider the costs in choosing your filter.
